PNA poll: Obama leads Romney by four points in Colorado

As Mitt Romney heads to battleground Colorado this week, the Democratic-leaning firm Project New America is out with a poll showing President Obama with a slight edge in the Centennial State, leading 48 percent to 44 percent.

The survey of 601 likely voters taken over three days last week also give Obama a big lead among registered unaffiliated voters, 57 percent to 30 percent for Romney.

"A 27-point margin for the President among Unaffiliated voters is surprising," said Jill Hanauer, PNA president. "Colorado elections are won among Unaffiliated voters, mostly in the suburbs of Denver. Mitt Romney has a steep hill to climb with this group."

Yet the topline figures show just how tight the race is and why the state is considered up-for-grabs - Obama's lead is exactly the margin of error for the poll.

The president has some positive signs in the poll in addition to the independent number - Romney is below 30 percent with Hispanic voters.
Obama gets 67 percent to 24 percent for Romney. And he is ahead 51 percent to 40 percent with women voters.
