re: "He said this is for you to go and buy a nice car,"
That WAS a good story!
I can deduce that the anonymous donors are elderly - since they apparently think that $5,000 will buy a nice car. In this day and age, it might buy a fairly nice used motorcycle. If our government continues debasing at this rate (and here's a tip for you: IT WILL), our hero had better do his shopping soon or he'll be looking instead for a nice bicycle.
And THAT, in a nutshell, is why government needs to go. I pity those who are planning on a normal retirement - particularly those who are already pushing 70 and thinking that a million bucks or so is enough. Such people are in for a rude awakening from the unprecedented price inflation that's about to unfold.
The trick is get off the grid. Leave the cities and suburbs. Get land. Grow food. Make sure you can get by without electricity or oil. Befriend productive neighbors who'll cover your back and with whom you can trade. Learn to hunt. Learn a craft that other people will value even when things get brutally difficult. Make sure your kids understand that their responsibility to family BEGINS, not ENDS, when they reach adulthood.
We're in a country that doesn't know how to live that way anymore. The transition won't be fun.
