Bill Clinton slams Scott Walker agenda

By TIM MAK | 6/1/12 3:04 PM EDT

Former President Bill Clinton encouraged cooperation between the two parties Friday at a rally in support of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett — even as he savaged Barrett opponent Gov. Scott Walker (R) ahead of the Wisconsin recall election on Tuesday.

“If you like the idea that it should be harder for the young, the poor, the minorities, the first generation of immigrants to vote, by all means, stay home Tuesday,” said Clinton, hyping the crowd up.

“He [Barrett] dealt with the biggest budget cuts to the city of Milwaukee in its history from the state, and how did he do it? With shared sacrifice, shared responsibilities, not breaking the unions,” he added.

Clinton reserved harsh words for Barrett’s critics, alluding to Walker and certain Wisconsin Republicans as the “no compromise crowd.”

“This divide-and-conquer, no compromise crowd, if they’d been in control, there never would have been a United States Constitution,” said Clinton. “Every day when a child says the pledge of allegiance, it is a rebuke to the far-right, winner-take-all, take-no-prisoners, divide-and-conquer, constant conflict philosophy of government.”

But even as he slammed Republicans – without mentioning them directly by name – Clinton mused about the importance of compromise and working across the aisle.

“Cooperation works. Constant conflict is a dead-bang loser and you need to get rid of it,” said Clinton, rattling off incidences of Republicans and Democrats cooperating, the day after he praised Mitt Romney for a “sterling” record at private equity firm Bain Capital.

Clinton said that Barrett represented the antithesis of the “divide-and-conquer strategy” that he thought was dominating Wisconsin and D.C.

“It is not about Republicans and Democrats, or traditional conservatives and liberals. You know, nobody’s right all the time, and a broken clock is right twice a day… so to have a divide and conquer strategy is nuts,” said the 42nd president of the United States.

The folksy former president showed off a copy of his speech, written in pen, before kicking off his remarks - and included some signature comments that showed his empathy with those in economic distress.

“Times are tough, and you’ve got to get up every day… and you start the day, you look in the mirror and you say, ‘God, is it going to get better? How long is it going to be? What’s my future going to be like?’ And when people are uncertain and afraid it’s easy to get them confused and divided,” Clinton mused.
