Every family has had losses to drugs, we've one, meth, dealing, in his 30s, booze, drugs, lost most of his teeth, parents covered fixits twice, no more, disowned, but them mom weakens. Pacemaker saved his butt, but a few times in the slammer hasn't helped.. And now with health issues they won't keep him more that a couple days.. Parents pay rent of a place for him, handle his mail, pretty tough to fix stupid... When he's straight, nice guy, strong, charming, then off he goes... Even has skills, tile setter, painter... Could have gone to college done anything, blew or snorted it all away... If he lives he would have inherited millions, now, he's pretty well written off... When mom says he's dead, he's toast..
Couple nephews were into the flower child days of SF, one died at 28, the other pulled out, but has health problems... Again, parents were doing great in business, could have covered college easily, all blown off...
By immigration reform, I assume you mean legalizing those who successfully snuck across our border, and bringing in more that we don't need.
Don't know how much exposure you and your family have had to hard drug use. In my family, we found it devastating for the two involved. No police involvement, but as my son remarked, "Dad, drugs turn you into a piece of shit." Don't see the same severe problems with pot. Prescription drug abuse is no bargain either.
