Very true! Mine was a loaded question to Clo, but secure transport of unused rods is still important but not nearly as hazardous as transporting spent fuel rods.

However, Obama doing nothing about permanently storing spent fuel rods as well as recovery of materials from spent fuel rods smacks of gross negligence, gross laziness, gross ignorance, or gross something. I should think Fukushima would have stirred him a little bit.

Unused nuclear fuel rods are not nearly as toxic nor radioactive as are spent fuel rods.

In their original form there is virtually NO Plutonium present, but during nuclear fission a certain percentage of the Uranium fuel is transmuted into Plutonium, the most toxic material known to man. Also the other transmuted elements created during the life of a fuel rod are generally much more radioactive than was the original Uranium.
