The sellout streak began on May 15, 2003, when Pedro Martinez beat the Texas Rangers, 12-3. Fenway Park’s sellout streak hit 745 games on Sunday afternoon.
It has been more than eight years since a seat went unsold at Fenway.
The Fenway streak, which began a year after the arrival of the team’s current ownership of John Henry, Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino, is almost 250 games longer than the previous record held by the Cleveland Indians and nearly 500 games longer than the next-longest active streak, held by the Philadelphia Phillies, who are approaching 200 consecutive sellouts.
Sure looked like a lot of empty seats earlier this year after a disasterous finish last season and a slow start this year.
