Here are my definitions for 'liberal' and 'conservative':
A 'conservative' is happy with what the country WAS - the Founders' intent, where applicable - and would like to preserve it.
A 'liberal' is unhappy with what the country WAS - again, the intent where it applies - and wants to change it.
These days, Democratic party positions are mostly liberal. But, surprisingly, Republican party positions are mostly liberal too, albeit, of a different bent.
The Republican and Democratic parties are both Progressive.
