It's useless to attempt to define millions of complex people neatly into a sentence or two as if they were Rush Limbaugh Dittoheads or Faux Nooz Zombies.

Instead, I tried to offer my personal impression of most liberals I know. I tried to focus of their major characteristics to build a (positive) profile.

ktc,

re: "As far as liberals go, you have confused liberals with Democrats and I'm sure with those in our underclasses who are desperately seeking and will take anything to alleviate their distress."

If you think that, then you must not have read my post. I stated in it that 'Republican positions are mostly liberal too.'

re: "I think your definitions are weak, if not nonsensical."

Fair enough, but I at least took a stab at it. You offered no definition at all.

That's too bad. I think knowing the meaning of words we're using is essential if there is going to be any common ground for discussing the liberal and conservative philosophies, and essential to assessing the extent to which the major parties have failed us.

You once corrected me on my use of the word "liberal." Why, then, are you unwilling to define it?

My dictionary provides numerous definitions for "liberal," most of which are not relevant to politics. The one that comes closest is "one who is open-minded or not strict in the observance of orthodox, traditional or established forms or ways."

Do you even like that definition? I don't actually think it deviates too far from mine, though my definition goes a step further, saying that liberals are unhappy with our nation's roots. Perhaps that's the part of my post with which you took umbrage, but it's tough for me to say since you aren't making any effort to explain yourself.
