...there was a time in this country when ya could get arrested in small towns in south alabama and never be heard from again. I don't want that. Sometimes gubmint can defend your rights or at least investigate violations thereof.

I agree with that, except for the "as much as possible" part.

Government should exist to HELP its citizens, not to saddle them with obligations for expenses and services they don't wish to incur. Government should finance its operations with tariffs. It could be done. We had all the government we needed in 1910.
