I think most folks want somethin from the gubmint. Some of them want income and healthcare. Some want the gubmint to guarantee em a job at a "living wage" (living profits for the company don't seem to be important) Farmers want gubmint subsidies, guys who like to fish want the gubmint to build boat ramps at the reservoirs and want everybody taxed to pay for it. Some folks want to be able to get abortions on demand and others want the gubmint to outlaw em completely. Criminals want a free lawyer and they want the cops to protect em from their potential victims. Everybody wants a school system and a retirement program blah blah blah. To most folks, I think socialism is when somebody else gets a gubmint check.
On top of all that, people are all prejudiced, weak and corrupt in some way or another. Even the best of us. We may not "like" gubmint but we need a certain amount of it or the predators will inherit the earth.
Liberals are like a "Slinky". Totally useless, but somehow ya can't help but smile when you see one tumble down a flight of stairs!
