A lot of cool computer stuff out there for boats and sailboats.  I have a new VHF radio that has AIS.  ( Automatic Identification System)  it polls to see what other ships/boats are out there.  Gets  a bunch of info from them.  Lat/Lon, speed, heading,name,size,destination.  Passes the info to my chart plotter which displays the ships as a icons on its screen. so I can see all that's around me.   The chart plotter then plots all the targets courses to determine danger of collision.  If so it will give me another heading to avoid the ship.  Will alarm and flash when I get within 1000 yards.   I can also select the ship on the screen and key the mic and only talk to that ship that I selected.  ( digital selective calling). Cool stuff.

I have a couple of ipad2. I bought one to use on my sailboat and liked it so much I bought another for home.

Lots of sailing apps available. Active captain is one I use a lot. Couple of nav programs. Tides-windfinderd programs, anchor watch. All kinds of stuff.

I have the garmin marine network on the boat so my iPad talks to my chart plotter. so I can create routes on the iPad at home and when I get on the boat they upload to the chart plotter.

I keep all the manuals for the boat on it as PDFs.

With iCloud everything on the iPads and my iPhone stay up to date.

I don't use my laptop much anymore, just for work.


You should get one. You'll like it.
