Way too many teachers teach to the test, not to the knowledge... Rote memory is great fir those that have it, but assembling those learned facts into the big picture escapes all but a small percentage... Of 100 guys/gals at work, maybe 2 really grasped complex issues, problems, and many times the sharpest had other fatal personality flaws where they could never be leaders of any kind... Scale that up, we see why we have limited leadership.. And that extra bit to make top techs, can't train for it, really, it has to come from within the individual... Sometimes some will surprise you, but we had managers that never valued the true wizards, thought they could just train others... FAIL...

I'd hire math graduates who couldn't apply their mathmatics knowledge to the simplest of everyday business problems. Physics majors were the best.
