No, they did not. They knew who it was... everyone in the whole town thought he was responsible from the very start... and rode him pretty hard. He eventually led them to her body - it was on his mother's property. He claimed to have simply found it while walking around. Before anyone brought up charges, he died in an overdose.
It wasn't a very satisfying outcome. I'd like to think it was a suicide, but it probably wasn't. He was into huffing and had built himself a box in which to better enjoy his passtime. As I heard it, the folks who found him said it was like he was lying peacefully in his coffin.
I was 13-14 at the time.
