Economic Week in Review: Will consumers carry the ball?
June 29, 2012
Consumers are growing rattled at a dicey juncture. Just when manufacturing is showing signs of a slowdown, consumers’ outlook is dimming as lower gasoline prices and tentative progress in the housing market prove to be no match for the limp job market, zigzagging stock market, and high-stakes squabbling in Europe. For the week ended June 29, the S&P 500 Index rose 2% to 1,362 (for a year-to-date total return—including price change plus dividends—of about 9.5%). The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 2 basis points to 1.67% (for a year-to-date decline of 22 basis points).
