Calif. poll: Obama crushing Romney

California’s respected Field Poll is out with new presidential polling numbers today that highlight just how bad it is for Mitt Romney, and Republicans, in the state that delivers far more electoral votes than any other.
President Obama leads Romney by 55 percent to 37 percent among likely California voters – he even has comfortable leads among white non-Hispanic voters (50-43) and males (51-3, two demographic groups he struggles with elsewhere.
Among Hispanics, Obama has a 66-22 lead.
The only religious group Romney carries is Protestants, by a wide margin. But he gets killed among Catholics (56-33) and other religions (78-19).
Obama’s favorability ratings are 58-39; his job approval rating isn’t far off that mark at 55-39. Romney, by contrast, is underwater in his favorability: 36 percent have a favorable impression while 55 percent have an unfavorable impression.
For the former Massachusetts governor, the numbers are getting worse, not better. A year ago, the Field Poll had Romney’s favorables at 38-34.
No one expected California would be a competitive state in 2012, so the numbers aren’t exactly a surprise. But the sheer disparity between the mindset of the nation’s largest state and the rest of the country is remarkable.
Until Bill Clinton won the state in 1992, California voted for the GOP presidential nominee in 9 of the10 previous presidential elections. The Field Poll data is a reminder of how far it's gone from being a competitive two-party state, and how it’s become a cornerstone of the Democratic Party’s electoral coalition since 1992.
