Clo,

Kristol says it would be an issue "for a day or two", but I suspect the Romney people know that's being naive.

Talking about SEC filings, corporate board meetings, etc goes over most people's heads as they have nothing in their lives to relate it to. However, tax returns are something else altogether. Even 'Joe six-pack' fills out a tax return and what he sees there HE CAN relate to and so if Willard's returns for the years in question, mainly 1999 through 2002, shows that he was indeed receiving direct compensation from Bain in amounts 'greater than $100,000', which is how it was noted on some of those SEC documents, people are going to start asking, and I don't mean media pundits or Obama surrogates, but average people on the street, that if you were still getting paid by some company how can you then claim that you 'didn't work there'. They know that when they quit a job (or lose it for some other reason) that the paychecks stop, and pretty damn quick too. If these older returns shows a consistent stream of significant compensation (and to 'Joe six-pack', a $100K is not trivial) over this period in question, this will undermine everything that the candidate and his people have been saying for the past couple of weeks. At best it will look like they were hiding something, at worst, it will be seen as an outright lie about something that must be much worse than it already appears to be. Where there's smoke there must be fire.

Kristol: Romney 'crazy' not to release tax returns

Bill Kristol and the Obama campaign agree on something: Mitt Romney should immediately release his tax returns.

"He should release the tax returns tomorrow. It's crazy," Kristol said on "Fox News Sunday." "You gotta release six, eight, 10 years of back tax returns. Take the hit for a day or two."

The conservative commentator said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee then should give a speech on Thursday calling for a "serious" debate with President Barack Obama on capitalism, allowing the campaign to turn the page and put the focus back on the president's record.

Romney has only released his 2010 tax returns and estimated returns for last year, but he has refused to release additional documents even though it's been common practice for candidates to do so, prompting scathing criticism from the Obama campaign.
