Wayne Powell and his son, Major Sean Powell, in 1998.
Wayne Powell is a retired Army Colonel, a small business owner, and a community lawyer.
Wayne Powell was born and raised in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. He is seeking the Democratic nomination to run for Congress against Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor because veterans and working people need someone in Washington who will fight for them.
As owner and proprietor of the Powell & Parrish law firm, Wayne represents working people who need help making ends meet.
Wayne Powell served in the U.S. Army for 30 years, 5 years of active duty and 25 years in the Active Reserves. He was called back into active duty after September 11, 2001 to command a specialized Army intelligence unit. Wayne was highly decorated during his military career and awarded the Legion of Merit when he retired as a full Colonel in 2002.
Wayne was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Richmond in 1972, and received a Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1973. After 4 years of full time military service, Wayne Powell attended the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond and graduated in 1980.
Wayne served as Staff Clerk to the Supreme Court of Appeals of Virginia, was appointed Assistant Attorney General by then Attorney General Gerald Baliles, and served as Deputy Commissioner of the Virginia Worker’s Compensation Commission for six years. He entered private practice in 1991, and founded his present firm of Powell & Parrish in 1999.
Wayne has always stepped up to lead. A product of the Richmond public schools, he served for two terms as chair of the Lay Advisory Committee to the Henrico County School Board where his children were educated.
With a lifetime of service to his country and community, Wayne is uniquely qualified to take Eric Cantor to task for selling out the people of the 7th District. Wayne believes that our elected representatives should be partners, rather than obstacles, to the success of our communities. Wayne wants to represent the working men and women who too often feel neglected by a political system in which big corporations and partisan agendas hold undue influence.
Wayne and his wife Katherine live in Chesterfield County. He is the proud father Sean, a Major in the Army currently serving in Afghanistan, and Michelle, a legal professional, and the proud grandfather of five.
