I don't think there is any law out there that will keep nut cases from being nut cases and that gun control will only suffice to disarm the potential victims of folks like this.
BTW: Lots of folks are screaming that these killings were caused by Colorado's gun laws that allow folks to go about armed all the time if they like. Thing is, that this isn't true. Movie theatres fall under the heading of "gun free" zones out there.
The way this guy got his guns into the theatre was to buy a ticket, go in and then go out thru the emergency exit which he blocked open so he could get back in with his weapons. He knew when he went back in the door that he was in a gun free zone and that he would be the only person in there armed.
The emergency exit should have been alarmed and gone off raising hell when he opened it.
