The solution is to drag and drop into the deleted files. I have no idea why the normal delete would not work. Probably some kind of malware.
Speaking of malware. I recently got one that claimed to be from the Better Business Bureau about a complaint filed against me. It looked fairly real, but it wasn't. No way I was going to click their link. I have learned the hard way.
