Speaking of recent photos, here's a few from my trip to my alma mater week before last:

A view across Portage Lake from my hotel showing the old Quincy Mining Company Copper Smelter (which is being cleaned-up and being converted into a national historical site) with the Mount Ripley Ski Hill (owned and operated by the University) in the background.

The main drag of downtown Houghton, MI, a couple of blocks from my hotel.

And 'The Library', not where we went to study but a bar that was the favorite of many of us when we were students (the original building was gutted by a fire a few years after I graduated and was rebuilt and expanded adding the section with the windows which look out over Portage Lake, as seen in a pervious photo).

Anyway, as you can see, Winter is a significant season in that part of the country.
