Actor Eli Wallach Dies
Eli Wallach, the character actor who had memorable roles in The Godfather: Part III, The Magnificent Seven, The Misfits, and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, passed away Tuesday at the age of 98. Wallach received an honorary Oscar in 2010, just prior to his 95th birthday, and was declared by the Academy to be “the quintessential chameleon, effortlessly inhabiting a wide range of characters, while putting his inimitable stamp on every role.” Wallach, along with his wife, Anne Jackson, was part of one of the most prolific acting couples on the stage, and would often claim he only did films to pay the bills so he could do theater. Wallach was born in Brooklyn, and grew up Jewish in a predominantly Italian neighborhood. He went to the University of Texas at Austin, where he learned to ride horses, a skill that would help in his film career.
