Feds: T-Mobile Profited From Bogus Fees

Yet another reason to hate those “joke of the day” mass texts: On Tuesday, the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint against T-Mobile, alleging that the carrier profited from hundreds of millions of dollars in fees related to “premium” text messages that customers didn’t sign up for.

The FTC alleges that T-Mobile received between 35 and 40 percent of the total amount charged to customers for these messages, amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars since 2009. The complaint aims to ensure refunds for every customer charged for these messages without their consent.
The new complaint comes one month after T-Mobile introduced a program intended to proactively reach out to customers charged for these messages and give them a chance to request a refund.
