But that was not how the Republicans and the Right-wing media of the day portrayed it or what it was going to do to the country.

I can still remember my Ohio-Republican grandfather cursing virtually everything FDR had ever done, claiming that it was all some Communist plot and that he would never see a penny of that 'Socialist Security' thing.

And you know what, he was right.

He died when he was 64 and never collected a cent, but my grandmother would have been in pretty tough straights if it hadn't been for the benefits which SHE ended-up drawing based on what HE had contributed all those years.

Hi OCU:

Wasn't Social security self supporting, running a large surplus for decades, and a retirement system for the working class?

I know it was later expanded to include the disabled.
