...tell him to do the exercises they give him to do and when he gets to where he can walk by himself he should try to take frequent short walks. When he gets to where he can walk greater distances try for a mile or so a day with the ultimate goal of about 3 miles in half an hour.
...also milk it for all it's worth with the wifey. Opportunities like this only cme along once or twice in a lifetime.
