Cuomo Bans Non-Essential State Travel To Indiana

by Joe Jenkins Politics 1 hour 8 min ago

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo has banned all non-essential state travel to Indiana, effective immediately, after the passing of the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" that was put into law in the Hoosier State recently.

The new Indiana legislative measure, which was signed into law by Gov. Mike Pence, would potentially allow business owners in the state to deny certain services if it proves to go against widely held religious beliefs. Critics feel the law would allow business owners in Indiana to execute personal bias against members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

In response, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members of the state legislation – including Sen. Brad Hoylman and Assembly members Deborah Glick, Matthew Titone, Danny O’Donnell and Harry Bronson – drafted a letter to Cuomo pressuring him to put a ban on state-funded travel to Indiana.

Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy issued a similar executive order in the Nutmeg State on Monday.

"New York State has been, and will continue to be, a leader in ensuring that all LGBT persons enjoy full and equal civil rights," Cuomo said in a statement. "With this action, we stand by our LGBT family members, friends and colleagues to ensure that their rights are respected."
