Based on 2009 tax year filing data, the Internal Revenue Service says an adjusted gross income, or AGI, of $343,927 or more will put you in the top 1 percent of taxpayers.
Hardly a 1 percenter, perhaps 5%, but it's the result of over 50 years of effort on the part of my wife and I, because we certainly didn't start out at this lofty level. I have to admit that my family could have never been considered 'poor' even by the standards of the time, but my wife's family certainly fell into that category. This is why she would never consider retiring back to our home town, even though I would. Her memories of her childhood are not as good as are mine. Her leaving home, before she was even out of high school, was more like an escape than anything.
