As world leader discuss climate change, Pacific islanders watch their nation vanishing into the sea

Leaders of the Marshall Islands are trying to convey to policy makers the peril facing the Pacific island nation as sea levels rise — and to shape the legal and financial terms of a major climate change accord now being negotiated in Paris.
“It does not make sense for us to go to Paris and come back with something that says, ‘In a few years’ time, your country is going to be underwater,’” said Tony A. deBrum, the country’s foreign minister. “We see the damage occurring now. We’re trying to beat back the sea.”
