I'm also type-2 diabetic but so far I've managed to control it with diet and oral medications. But it runs in the family.
My maternal grandfather had what they called 'sugar' back in those days and while he didn't actually die from it, it probably was a factor. I also had an aunt on my father's side that did die from the complications of diabetes. She had one leg and then the other amputated before it was over.
