My college history professor told us that it takes at least 50 years before the history of any era can be properly and accurately written.

...college professors prefer that everyone who was alive and remembers the details be dead before they rewrite history, otherwise they look like the total dumbasses they really are.

My college history professor told us that it takes at least 50 years before the history of any era can be properly and accurately written. Basically he was telling us that it takes that long before society recognizes what was relevant and what was not and besides, history can only be written by those who did not participate in it first hand. What was written by the contemporaries of the time is what the real historians call 'research material'.
