I think they're scared of what might happen during the convention when the Trump crowd realizes that the RNC establishment has stolen the nomination from their candidate. There could be riots both in the streets and inside the convention center itself, and since the Secret Service has already announced that there will be no personal firearms allowed inside the convention center, how would these "prominent Republicans" protect themselves?

JEB BUSH TO SKIP GOP CONVENTION

Jeb Bush will not attend the 2016 Republican National Convention, the failed presidential candidate said Tuesday. The former Florida governor’s decision to skip what is sure to be a contentious week in Cleveland comes along with several other prominent Republicans considering opting out,

including Sens. Kelly Ayotte (“I’ve got a lot of work to do in New Hampshire”) and Richard Burr (“I’m up for reelection”), and Rep. Mick Mulvaney, who said, “Let the activists, let the people decide... I’m going to stay home and work.” 
This year’s RNC is expected to play host to potential melee between frontrunner Donald Trump and the many groups who seek to deny him the nomination.
