What does it mean when a candidate wins a political endorsement? If it means that the endorser agrees with the positions of the candidate being endorsed, then there is real hypocrisy whenever someone who tried to win a nomination and lost endorses the winner. After all, they previously disagreed, so they were either lying then or they're lying now, right?
If it's wrong for Rand Paul to endorse Donald Trump on this basis, then it's wrong for ANY of the sixteen Republicans who have bowed out of the race to endorse Trump. I don't think that's what "endorsement" means. I think it means that the endorser can support the nominee in good conscience and is willing to work for/with him.
It's true that Donald Trump is the least libertarian nominee in decades. But I don't think that makes him someone that Rand Paul cannot work with. Rand Paul may agree with some of Trump's positions. He may consider Trump to be a good man.
In contrast, there is no way after all that has been learned, that anyone could view the Clintons as honest, respectable people. They're corrupt. Criminal. If Rand Paul ever knowingly endorsed someone like Hillary, I couldn't ever trust him again. My respect for him would be lost.

'I've always said I will endorse the nominee," said Rand Paul.
"You know, I've always said I will endorse the nominee," said Paul. "I think it's almost a patriotic duty of anyone in Kentucky to oppose the Clintons, because I think they're rotten to the core, I think they're dishonest people, and ultimately I think we have to be concerned with what's best for Kentucky."
Paul cited Clinton's recent comments about eliminating coal jobs as reason enough for Kentucky voters to oppose her.
