A few weeks ago, I heard a pundit on the radio say something akin to the following:
"Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are widely disliked. There is time for Donald to improve upon his image, and I think he will do that. Hillary's reputation, however, is etched in stone."
I agree with that.
What we've seen is that every time Hillary opens her mouth, her poll numbers fall. Her best strategy for the coming months would be to just crawl into a cave and hole up, which she can't possibly do.
Donald Trump, on the other hand, can tone things down and come across as a reasonable fellow. Moreover, as a leftist on many issues (single-payer healthcare, ending loopholes for the rich, attacking foreign sweatshops that steal American jobs, upping the miniumum wage), he's going to win fans who are currently in the Clinton and Sanders camps.
I think Trump almost has this in-the-bag. There's one thing that worries me: *IF* Hillary teams up with Sanders, she will be very hard to beat. Sanders has dropped hints that he might be open to the idea, so it's troubling. Because of his age, my guess is that Sanders would insist on responsibilities that would make him a co-President. (This is what Reagan demanded when Ford asked him to be his running mate in 1976. Ford declined.) If Hillary takes him up on that, nearly all of Sanders' supporters will vote for Clinton in November, and some 'Undecideds' will as well. I don't know if Trump could overcome that.
