In order to appraise Castro properly, you have to take into account the country that was before he took over and Americans have a hard time taking their heads out of their asses when one is labeled as a leftist or communist.
Cuba was a country owned by a few powerful, corrupted families, that had put in power a a corrupt asshole. The US based Mafia was in charge. It was a SHITHOLE.
Castro' s arrival brought an abrupt end to this crap. Then, Kennedy decided that having an independent country so close to our shores was no good, and told him to fk off and that he'd take him out.
At that point, Castro, who was not a communist, realized his only way to keep Cuba for Cubans was to kiss The Soviet Union's ass, and the rest is history. The Soviet Union was not his first choice, just his only one. Controllng that situation turned him into someone Americans reviled, and Cubans, for the most part, love.
Average lifetime for Cubans is 80 years old, and healthcare is FREE. For the US it is 79, and it is the most expensive in tne world, BY FAR. Take that for our wonderful healthcare.
Anyway, I am not saying I'd love to live in Cuba, I am saying that he was a patriot who wanted his country to be guided by its people, and for better or worse, he succeeded. I have zero sympathy for the right winger, fascist Cubans in Miami. Their own kids don't support them. They just want to go to Cuba, and meet their relatives. It's over. Hopefully, they won't turn it into Disneyworld for rednecks. Castro would turn in his grave, I'd agree with him, because his original idea was a good one. Who the fk needs to eat at McDonald's in Paris? I was there last summer, and Paris has lost all its color, what you think of Paris. Don't go there. It's a boring fkng place. Havana isn't. Will try to get there this winter, before it turns into a modern shithole, like any other. And, lastly, I'd suggest anynof yiu do the same, and experience life as it was for our parents., simpler, closer, a life to live.
Amd one more thing: One of the most litterate nations on earth.
