It could be they both are. My tractor is John Deere. So are some of its accessories. Yet I'm not a farmer. Maybe John Deere isn't making much of its money from American farmers. Maybe it's not even making much of its money from AMERICANS. That's hard to believe, though. The country continues to grow huge amounts of food.
A bit of potentially useful information: Nearly all of America's farmland is infertile. It's been ruined through years of abuse and is wholly dependent upon cheap fertilizers. The fertilizers, in turn are produced through an oil-intense process.
I'm not passing judgement on that. In a capitalist world, everyone does what works best. But if the price of oil ever rises significantly and long term, I don't think folks will be prepared for what happens to the price of food.

American farmers are making no money and are only managing to barely stay afloat by adding a massive amount of debt and slashing capital expenditures...yet John Deere's stock continues to soar to all new highs with each passing day...so which is right?
