in that price range you will not find anything that is not close to a decade old and obviously 40,000 miles is not going to be likely and eve if you could find that, you will pay extra for the low mileage.

That said, Toyota Corrola, Honda Civic are dependable.

Another Vehicle you should consider and not be afraid of is a 2010 Hyundai Sonata GLS

A private seller in Virginia Beach for example could expect to get around $%%00 - $6000 for one in good to very good condition with mileage in 50000 - 60,000 range.

They are sound, safe, good vehicles. I own one. I also own a 2004 OPTIMA which is a daily driver for my wife and it has been a good car. A newer one would be better and you can affor that as well.

The Elantra is a nice Compact that is fairly roomy inside and nice to drive as well. So in your search, include the Sonata, Elantra and Optima. The Sonata and Optima are mid-sized and come with a lot of standard things as does the Elantra. They will not cost as much as the Corrola, Camry, Accord, or Civic.

My Mitsubishi Galant ES was extrememly reliable, and rode great. Not a lot of frill but surprisingly comfortable and a sound mechanical vehicle. It was a 2005 model. I kept it ten years and 133,000 miles on it and finally had to change the struts in the front. I sold it in 20 minutes for $3300. The car is still being driven by the person I sold it to two years later.

Just saying that do not overlook the KIA, Hyundai, or Mitsubishi Galant, which you might get a much better price on and possibly a newer model for what you are looking for. I can attest to these vehicles because I have owned them and driven them.

Happy hunting....

Do any of you have recommendations for a small- to mid-sized used car for my son? He doesn't like large cars and can't drive a stick shift. In fact, he doesn't have his license yet, but I assume he will in the next couple of months.

I'd like to find him something that will last for his college career, when he won't be driving too much. So a car that has another 40,000 miles in it, hopefully for less than $5,000 in a private transaction, would be ideal. I'd pay more, of course, if its condition increases its probable remaining years.

I hate to say it, but I'd prefer that it be foreign since I've seen how American vehicles start falling apart after six or seven years.

Any thoughts? (I'm hoping for something along the lines of "Yeah, get him a 2010 Camry with fewer than 100k miles.") Since I don't follow the car market at all, I don't even know who's making the best vehicles these day. Or, rather, who made the best ones six or seven years ago.
