Thanks so much! While I prefer not to buy from a dealer, this info is invaluable. I'm making copies of both the 2009 and 2010 ads. The 2010 with only 44,000 miles is especially tempting!
I've driven an Elantra. Back around 2004, my father needed a car and I took him to several dealerships. Even then, Hyundai's Elantra was considered one of the best small cars... a gem with little name recognition but great potential. Remember when Hyundai had a 100,000 power train warranty on all their vehicles? Best in the industry. I don't know if Hyundai still has that on its cars, but the fact that they did spoke volumes to the quality of their cars.
So I drove it and we both liked it, but my father (84 at the time) couldn't make up his mind... mostly out of concern that my Mom wasn't there. He wound up waiting another three or four years and eventually bought a Nissan Sentra.
An Elantra with only 44,000 miles on it should last Joey for another five years, easy. BUT, I'm going to shop around... As I said earlier, lots of people around here get deployed or have to move. It's not hard to find distressed sales, and I'd like to get one of those and avoid the dealers.

Mileage in the 44,000. Nice size car and is clean as a pin. Yes, it is more than $5500. BUT you could likely negotiate a better price and get closer for a very nice low mileage well thought of car that will be safe for your son.
