Yes, but to do that you probably had to have cash sewn up in your mattress - because if you had it in a bank, you likely lost it all. So, is the real lesson here that you should buy stocks when they're cheap, or that you shouldn't keep all your eggs in one basket?
I won't discuss all the places I keep my "eggs" because that would make me vulnerable, but I do make an effort to ensure that my family will have a good chance of surviving any crisis that can be survived. There's not much we can do if a Joe Stalin comes into power and sets his sights on us, but there's plenty we can do to improve our chances in the event of epidemic, economic collapse, civil war, riots (don't live in a city), oil shortages, food shortages (stockpile 6-months'worth), prolonged drought (don't live in a desert!), antibiotic resistant bacteria (clean your home, stock your own antibiotics in case they are rationed) and even an EMP that destroys our electronics. All survivable... if you act ahead of time... but maybe not if you don't.
