Realist - Everybody in America is soft, and hates conflict. The cure for this, both in politics and social life, is the same -- hardihood. Give them raw truth.

There is most definitely an art to it.

Back in the early 90s, I had a co-worker whose husband was the service manager for a large car dealership. One day, she told me that her husband was bummed because his best mechanic - a young kid in his early 20s who had been with them for only a short while - was leaving to open his own shop with his dad. He said this kid could accurately diagnose anything and everything that was wrong with a car - and then fix it. Once he opened his own shop, that dealership's service department sent all of its overflow work to him. I started using that father & son shop as soon as they opened and have been with them ever since. I'm exaggerating, of course, but he's like Carnac the Magnificent ... he seemingly just has to get within a few feet of a car and ... voila! ... he knows what to do.
