Let's not lose sight of the fact that they're patients who have cancer.
If I have a terminal disease, I might agree to some dangerous treatments in order to give myself a better chance or surviving. And, yes, the treatments might kill me. BUT I WAS DYING ANYWAY.
And dying is no way to live.
I'm sure Bill Paxton didn't expect to die when he had a valve of his heart replaced last week. The mortality rate is quite low. It happens, though. So, should he have skipped the surgery? Only in hindsight can a person say yes to that. Without the surgery, he'd have been dead within a few years. Maybe even a few weeks - I don't know. OCU just had valve replacement (or repair) surgery. From the sound of it, without the surgery he could have keeled over at any time. Fortunately, it worked out for OCU. Not so for Bill.
So, a person takes his chances when he goes to see the doctor. I wouldn't have thought that this was news.
