Summary
VW’s electrification plans consists of three main steps: (1) Current and refreshed cars, (2) Two flagships from Audi/Porsche, and (3) All-new platform.
The most interesting of these is naturally the third and final step: The all-new 100% electric platform.
Pilot production of this “MEB” platform starts around mid-2019 and customer volume production around mid-2020 as a 2021 model.
There will be 30 different models in the MEB series by 2025 under the VW, Audi, Porsche, SEAT, Skoda, Bentley and other brands.
“Thanks” to the Chevrolet Bolt and soon the Nissan LEAF 2.0, VW has fallen behind in electric cars. It looks to change this with the MEB platform.
Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAY) is the world's largest automaker measured by unit sales volume, and has announced a major shift in production to electric cars, with major volume targets for year 2025. Based on prior statements, as well as recent management interviews with media, here are the targets for 2025:
3 million BEVs (battery-electric cars, as opposed to PHEVs, or plug-in hybrids) sold per year in year 2025. 2 out of those 3 million will be sold in China; 1 million in the rest of the world.
30 different BEV models under all VW Group brands (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda, Bentley and others) and an unspecified number of additional PHEV models. There will be 10 combined BEV and PHEV models combined, announced in year 2018 alone.
Let's start with the models that are closest to current production, and work ourselves up to the more ambitious models that are launching in 2019 and beyond.
