Ray Kurzweil, inventor, genius, and Google’s Director of Engineering, has a long history of accurate predictions. Of his 147 post-1990 predictions, 86 percent were accurate. His most noteworthy prediction, however, is one that hasn’t yet happened: A technological ‘Singularity’ to impact mankind by 2045. He says:
“2029 is the consistent date I have predicted for when an AI will pass a valid Turing test and therefore achieve human levels of intelligence. I have set the date 2045 for the ‘Singularity’ which is when we will multiply our effective intelligence a billion fold by merging with the intelligence we have created.”
In Kurzweil’s opinion, humans will interface their brains with blood cell-sized computers, effectively growing the capacity of their neocortexes exponentially. The last time anything comparable to this happened was 2 million years ago, when humans evolved from animals and grew the large foreheads in which all advanced thinking takes place. If Kurzweil is right in this most dramatic prediction, humanity as it currently is will no longer exist. And that event lies just ahead.
