Facebook to Counter Gov’t ‘Propaganda’
Facebook announced Thursday that it will take action to counter what it called extensive government-sponsored information campaigns designed to deceive people for “geopolitical goals.” Such operations are often conducted using fake accounts, and go beyond the scope of the recent “fake news” phenomenon, the social-media giant said.
According to Reuters, which reviewed an advance copy of the company’s report on the matter, the “well-funded and subtle efforts by nations and other organizations to spread misleading information and falsehoods.”
Facebook recently suspended 30,000 accounts in France in the run-up to the first round of the country’s presidential election last Sunday.
